The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth

BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight.

BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog’s control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others.

In separate trials, BigDog runs at 4 mph, climbs slopes up to 35 degrees, walks across rubble, and carries a 340 lb load.

BigDog is being developed by Boston Dynamics with the goal of creating robots that have rough-terrain mobility that can take them anywhere on Earth that people and animals can go. The program is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

A food for thought

A good story which was told during one of our CHYK camps.

There was a village called as " potential land". The villagers there cultivated many things and they had to go to sell their things in a near by place called as the " Performance land".The villagers in the potential land were all doing the same type of work. The major difficulty was that to reach the performance land they had to cross a big river, where the water flow is thick and heavy and occasionally there used to be sudden drop of water from the top of mountains even.Almost every villager used to try crossing the river to reach the performance land so that they can earn their living . But only a few survived to reach the other bank. Many gave up in between, some were drowned, some got caught in the flow of river etc..This has been continuing for years.

Once, a new Officer came and saw the potential land and he studied deeply the problems faced by them .He thought that if there was a way to reach the performance land , all the villagers in the potential land can make a better living. So he thought of an idea .He decided to build a bridge across the river so that those from potential land can easily reach the performance land. It took months to build the river.By then, the officer had to move out from the village to some other designated post. Years later, the officer was curious to know about the people in the potential land.He imagined all of them prosperous and leading a good life there. Once he decided to check this out and reached the potential land. Alas.. he saw that the situation was still the same. He could not find any reason as to what has happened there. He asked a person near by. He was told that now that the bridge is there, they used to swim across the river, under the bridge. This helped them to stay away from the Sun.

This story is indeed a " grain for thought" .

Are we all not in the potential land?

All of us have to reach the performance land to do something. But we face many difficulties to reach that performance land, and only few of us succeed to perform well in the world.

Even if someone is ready to give us a helping hand, what are we all doing?

still the same old story in a new way..

You are successful and creative only when you see an opportunity in every difficulty

The news readings on the class

Afsath gave us a good review. The news on
  • super computer by IBM

Yet another some details on IBM supercomputer

The computer, called Advanced Strategic Computing Initiative White, or ASCI White, covers 9,920 square feet of floor space, equal to two NBA basketball courts, and weighs 106 tons. It is able to perform 12.3 trillion operations per second, three times faster than the next-fastest computer. In creating ASCI White, IBM exceeded one of the most venerable axioms of computing, Moore's Law.

Good work my dear students. Too happy to see that you are giving efforts..

Kudos!!!

Good work Davis & Afsath.. All of you can read and put in your comments on my class as well. This will help me to add more to what you expect from the class.

Classes on Data resources & network resources

Coming on to this topic, we have already finished an overview on the data resources & the network resources
Under the data resources, I guess I have put your heads into the concept of databases, the storage technology. We discussed on the database trends, datawarehouse, data mining etc..

Under the network resources, we had discussions on the telecommunications & networks. vast area, we touched upon the different parts of networks, leaving ahead the overall idea of networks. The wireless communication , wifi wimax etc..

Please read more on such topics..

Classes on MIS for the week 22nd June to 27th June

We have discussed the enterprise applications, IT infrastructure.
The enterprise applications discussed include
  • SCM
  • CRM
  • KMS
The 7 different components of IT infrastructure were discussed. The contemporary hardware and software trends, including the computing techniques was included.

The main intention was to familiarize the general trends in hardware and software. You are expected to know the different IT players in the market in the different related fields.
